How did you get the DNA for Paulus Kuster who was born in 1644?

The simple answer is, there are certain Y chromosomes in the DNA that are passed from father to son that can be used for determining "DNA families" These particular genes (markers) remain the same from generation to generation for hundreds of years. So the male of today has the same markers of his direct male ancestors (passed down from father to son) of several hundred years. With a good paper trail and the results of many DNA tests DNA Families can be determined.
When occasionally one of the genes (markers) will change in value, that change is passed on to all future descendants of that male. For a more detailed explanation go to Chromosomes. It is on the scientific side but is easy to understand.
